Steven has presented continuing professional development courses for solicitors in Hong Kong on many topics associated with property law. Steven's research interests include equity and the law of trusts, Chinese custom and law, cultural heritage law, and law and technology. In 2023 Steven published the first treatise dealing formally and systematically with all the major aspects of and entitled, Digital Technology and Law.

Objective:

In recent years, the use of artificial intelligence in the practice of law has become relatively common. In particular, this has involved the use of generative artificial intelligence systems (GenAI) in the form known as large language models (LLM). These GenAI systems are used for diverse tasks to assist lawyers in their work ranging from simple search engines, summarizing, transcribing and polishing documents, to advanced legal research and document drafting. Many lawyers now sue these GenAi systems not least because they are often available, at least as an introductory version, for free. This three-hour seminar will consider how these free to access Gen AI systems, including ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Grok 3, may be used relatively safely by solicitors in Hong Kong. The seminar will begin with an introduction to artificial intelligence and how it works. We will then consider generative artificial intelligence and in particular large language models. The seminar will then explain how ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Grok 3 may be used, what these systems can do generally, and what they can do specifically for solicitors. Practical examples will be used to showcase their capabilities and also to highlight their limitations and possible issues that may arise with their use, particularly in assisting with legal research and drafting. Guidance will be offered on designing useful prompts to assist with legal text generation. The seminar will conclude considering the risks solicitors face in using ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Grok 3 and how these risks may be mitigated.
