Presenter's Biography:

Angela has a broad commercial chancery practice, representing corporations and individuals in complex disputes. Her core practice areas are company and commercial, probate, family trust, and defamation. Her expertise also extends across personal injuries and fatal claims, death inquests, property disputes, securities and finance, professional disciplinary actions, as well as injunctions.

Aside from litigation, Angela is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and she obtained the 2023 Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from the CIArb. Angela has experience of acting for parties in commercial and aviation arbitrations. She is on Bar List (Arbitrators) of the Bar Association.

Angela is regularly instructed as sole counsel to advise and to appear in courts and tribunals. She is equally at home acting within counsel teams.

Angela served as a member of the Investment Committee of The Bar Council from 2019 to 2024. She is also a member of the Panel of Advisor of the Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration, and a Member of the Social Workers Registration Board's Disciplinary Committee Panel.
 
Objective:

The Internet has made defamation happen more common and spreads much more easier and quicker that leads to more devastating and widespread consequences that one can imagine.

This course is to explore defamation in nowadays context where one can easily share, comment and distribute online by first revisiting the basic legal principles of defamation. Then we will discuss specifically a recent Court of Appeal judgement that involved defamation arising from online materials: Hoi Ting Tong Company Ltd v Choy Kwok Keung [2024] HKCA 582, on appeal from [2021] HKCFI 2888.

In particular, we will look into another most recent case: Poon Ki Chi v Poon Chuk Hung Jason [2024] HKCFI 3371 , wherein the Court has imposed immediate custodial sentence for breach of an injunction order prohibiting the publication of certain defamatory statements and procuring the removal of the same.
